Former horticulturist gets back to basics with home-based all-natural products

When it comes to skin care, for people and pets, Connie McCaffery is doing her best to get back to basics. The Cutchogue resident has been making and selling her own line of skin care products, including some items for dogs, and candles at her home since 2007 under the name Nature Maiden.

Except for a few synthetic oils, Mrs. McCaffery, 40, uses only natural ingredients -- including beeswax, shea and cocoa butters, tallow and essential oils -- in her extensive line of soaps, lip balms, deodorants and solid perfumes.

Soap scents, which are created with fragrance and essential oils, range from rosemary and sandalwood to unusual scents like freshly turned earth -- popular among gardeners, Ms. McCaffery said.

"Being a gardener myself, I love the smell of freshly turned earth," she said. "When I did various fairs and introduced the earth bar, other people loved the smell, too."

Sweet-flavored lip balms with goofy names like "Dog Drool" and "Duck Doo" are a hit with the kids.

"Most people buy them to give to their kids, but I have had adults buy them for themselves," Ms. McCaffery said. "They get a kick out of it."

Nature Maiden also offers over 30 varieties of soy candles, which burn slower and cooler than traditional wax candles, as well as soaps in the shapes of animals for kids and a line of all-natural dog shampoos and insect repellents.

Prices for individual products range from $3 to $14.99, and a portion of the proceeds from the dog products is donated to the North Fork Animal Welfare League.

After about four years working full-time for Sea Tow in Southold and weekends spent developing the business, Ms. McCaffery decided to make the transition into full-time entrepreneur about a year ago.

Her "earthy" products reflect her own nature, she said.

"I drive a pickup truck," Ms. McCaffery said Saturday afternoon from her kitchen, a space that doubles as laboratory and production facility for Nature Maiden. "I'm one of the most down-to-earth people you'll meet. I have a great connection to Nature in that regard, and I love old-fashioned things."

Using only her own products, the mother of two does have nice skin. She says she and her family haven't used store-bought skin care products, which are often made with synthetic chemicals, in years.

"The simplest ingredients are the most effective," she said. "The Japanese have healthy skin just by using a little camellia oil."

In addition to making the products, Ms. McCaffery runs every other aspect of her business by herself -- designing and updating www.NatureMaiden.com, blogging and taking photos, and handling the retail end. Her background is in horticulture, and she said the idea for Nature Maiden happened "by accident."

"I really always loved the original ChapStick in the plain old black tube, so I researched on the Internet how to make it," she said. "Then I started looking up how to make soaps and bath salts and solid perfumes and just thought -- why don't I start my own business?"

Nature Maiden is part of a growing trend. According to the website of the Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild, an Ohio-based networking group, the number of handcrafted soapmakers has "increased exponentially over the last 10 years, and the support services for them, including vendors of all types, have become an industry unto its own."

Ashley Beckman, owner of Golden Path Alchemy, a Los Angeles-based online retail company that sells herbal skin care products based on traditional Chinese medicine, agreed that as the world becomes "greener," people are focusing on all-natural products for their skin.

"It's very important what you put on your skin -- it's your largest organ and it absorbs over 60 percent of everything you put on it," she said. "When you apply skin care products, the ingredients bypass the hepatic system, the filtering process of the liver, and go straight to the bloodstream."

Selena Cozart, member of the Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild and owner of Salome's Simply Delightful Creations in Virginia, said she, too, has seen a growing number of people who are "responding to products that provide a enlightened level of care."

"The feedback from my customers is that the more they know about the benefits of all-natural, the more they want to try a variety of products that could benefit them without the use of pharmaceuticals, detergents or unnecessary preservatives," Ms. Cozart said.

Though Ms. McCaffery describes sales at Nature Maiden -- the bulk of which are done online -- as "inconsistent," she said she's confident her focus on simplicity in skin care will help her business bloom.

"This really is a labor of love," she said. "We do need to go back to nature."

In 2007 when I made my first lip balm I was amazed. It was so easy! I then proceeded to make bath salts and solid perfumes. Wow, I was on a roll. Without the intention of doing so, the products kept coming...I was hooked.

I worked a full time job when I started making my own bath & body products. I worked on the products mostly on weekends. I would spend all day mixing ingredients and standing over the stove; the counter covered with dozens of containers waiting to be filled.

I read everything I could about various ingredients. The benefits of them, how to use them, etc. I found some products to be great, while others, not so great, and I would move on to something else. Some products are harder to make than others.

Finally I made soap, I was so anxious to make a true homemade batch of soap. After reading and making sure I understood the process of making soap, I carefully proceeded this new venture. I was terrified of getting lye in my eyes, or on any part of my skin for that matter. I was SO careful. Imagine my surprise when I eagerly unmolded that first batch of soap and used it. WOW!! I couldnt believe I had made it. I started to strongly feel that I must share this with others. I created a list of all the soap varieties I would make- I wanted to have all the smells I could think of!

Well, since that start in 2007, I have an extensive product list which includes natural dog products as well. I am very excited about that. Having 2 dogs of my own, it is important to me to offer to others, as well as my own 2 dogs, a better alternative to chemicals. We need to go back to Nature.

I use mainly natural ingredients in my products. I use synthetic flavors and scents in some of my products, not all. Because of this, I cannot say all of my products are all natural. Some of my products are all natural though. I am very proud of my product line.

I believe that we all should use basic natural ingredients as much as possible. We need to simplify, become more basic in the ingredients we use- maybe we'd be healthier. I cant help feeling that if we could get back to basics in one form or another, that we'd be better off.

I created The Nature Maiden product line in 2007 in my kitchen.

One day while surfing the net, I came across homemade lip balms that others were selling. I loved the idea, and figured, I can do that too! For years I was addicted to the original Chapstick brand. I was convinced I could make my own lip balm, so I ordered supplies and tried it. I started with a pre-made base. It came out ok, I liked it. It would of been easy to get any recipe off the internet, but I wanted to create my own recipe, not use a pre-made or anyone else's, so I researched ingredients and tried different combinations. Some recipes worked, and some flopped. It was frustrating at times for sure. It took 1 1/2 years to perfect my own special recipe, and now I think it's perfect. Turns out I didn’t need half the ingredients I started with. It was not until early 2009, that I changed the lip balm recipe to what it is now, and I’m 100% happy with it.

Of course, the more research I did on ingredients and their uses and different combinations, I decided to add more products. I made bath salts, then solid perfumes & salves. Many products were created because of a need for them in my own family. After tiring of using doctor prescribed products for dry skin that did not work, I worked passionately on an all natural salve that would work for my family. When I saw the results, I was excited! I figured others may want to use them, so I offered them for sale. Frankly, with all the side effects on prescribed medications today, I was afraid to continue using them. Of course, that’s not to say that none of them work. I was aiming for a more natural approach for myself.

All of my products come with the ingredients listed, so you know what your getting.

I spent months thinking of a brand name for my product line. I am a Horticulturist, love nature, and working with wholesome ingredients in my products was the whole point of even doing it in the first place. I believe that much of what we need is found in Nature already. I wanted the word 'Nature' to be in the name; and since I feel as one with nature, Nature Maiden just seemed appropriate.

I then worked non-stop on a website to feature my products, constantly worked on labels, took pictures, and spent many hours, days & months on my computer. I needed to perfect everything, to come across as professional as possible. I was taking this serious. I was going to make this a business. I got all the necessary licensing as a business owner. I then trademarked the Nature Maiden name.

I am a mother & wife and I started this venture while working full time. Many co-workers have tried my products. I have many repeat customers who order from my website. I aim to ship same or next day. I always include free samples in each order. I’ve also get a lot of positive feedback.

Nature Maiden products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

Nature Maiden products are never tested on animals. I do make All Natural dog products which are formulated for dogs, and are safe for their use. No testing is ever done on my dogs. I fully research and understand the ingredients before I create a product for them.

I do everything myself, from manufacturing, label design, shipping, website maintenance, advertising, taxes, spreadsheets, ordering, inventory…you name it, I do it. Sometimes my younger son will help, but for the most part I handle every aspect of this business alone. My husband helped me financially to get my business started. Advertising is very expensive, so I do what I can to get the Nature Maiden name out there. I attend fairs and events to showcase and sell my products. I always get a great response. People often don’t believe that I make everything myself.

To date, I’ve created over 30 varieties of soap, which includes unscented varieties, shaving soaps, dog shampoo bars, fun soap for kid’s, gardener’s soaps, mechanic’s soap & others. There are several varieties of salves, body sprays, room/linen sprays, salt scrubs, deodorants, bug repellents, solid lotion bars, hydrosols, foot care products, lip balms, massage oils, products for dogs, a soap-of-the-month club, & nasal aromatherapy inhalers. I also offer my soap for wholesale purchase.

Why use Homemade Soap?

Homemade soap. What’s so great about it? Well, It’s all natural, & it’s nourishing because of the added butters & oils. It may cost more that the soap you buy in a supermarket, but that’s because it contains ingredients not found in commercially made soap. Homemade soap also retains the moisturizing glycerin that commercial soap bars are void of. Also, for the most part, commercial soap contains synthetic ingredients you can’t pronounce. The other thing wonderful about homemade soap is that it is an item we all need, everyday of our lives.

Now for the ingredients. The following is a list of general ingredients used in a variety of Nature Maiden soaps. Nature Maiden Soaps are made with sodium hydroxide (lye), tallow, shea butter, cocoa butter, distilled water, olive oil, camellia oil, aloe vera, honey, coconut oil, castor oil, essential oils, fragrance oil, natural exfoliants, natural clays, natural & pigments. Some soaps contain only essential oils, some contain fragrance oils (not considered 100% all natural), and some soaps have no added scent at all.

How do the ingredients become soap? Easy, by Saponification. It’s what happens when oils and lye chemically react- that chemical reaction creates soap. When all done, glycerin is left in the bar, a very moisturizing ingredient that helps along with the other butters & oils in soothing your skin.Glycerin naturally moisturizes the skin. Commercial soap makers remove the glycerin & process the glycerin into other products like hand and body lotion, creams, balms, and other moisturizers. This is why some commercially made soap can be so drying.

So, after the soap sets for 24 hrs, the soap is then cut into bars, and left to cure for a minimum of 3 weeks & up to 4 weeks. The curing process is important so that any remaining water in the soap will evaporate. The longer the soap cures, the harder the bar will become, and will therefore last longer. As far as any lye remaining in the soap, after the saponification process is complete, the lye is gone. You can use the soap 24hrs after you’ve made it, but it will be a bit soft. That’s why it’s put up to cure.

Nature Maiden Soaps are made in small batches, by hand, in my home. I do not have a large factory. Personal attention is given to every bar-from when the ingredients are carefully weighed out and mixed, while pouring the batch, while cutting and putting the bars up to set, while labeling & finally, when they are carefully packed for your order- a lot of time, passion and love goes into every bar- from start to finish.

The other great thing about homemade soap is that they come in all shapes & varieties. There are fun shapes for kids, now there’s a way to get your kid to take a bath! You can also have custom wedding favors made with soap, it’s something everyone will use- instead of giving you quests a dust collector, give them beautiful soaps instead.

There’s something about creating something with your hands, getting back to basics, that is so rewarding. I have not bought a bar of soap from the store in a long time. I make the soap for my family. Nature Maiden soaps lather beautifully, smell great, and are wonderful for your skin. If you don’t love my soaps, I’ll refund your money.

A lot is happening at Nature Maiden. The latest product added to the line are Solid Lotion Bars. There are currently 17 varieties available, and several more on the way. My lotion bars come in a 1oz push up tube. Nature Maiden Lotion bars are a hot seller!

Another new item is All Natural Dog Salve. This was at the request of a customer. Another proving to be popular product are my all natural Dog Shampoo Bars. Customers were buying them at the last festival I attended. Other customers looked at the product with disbelief. Sure, All Natural Dog Soap, what an excellent idea!
